Sweet Melissa’s, located next door to the Brick Store Pub is a nice, warm and friendly spot for brunch. Only open for breakfast and lunch, Sweet Melissa’s is a nice choice other than Crescent Moon, the Flying Biscuit, or Thumbs Up Diner – all which are packed after 9am on the weekends. One of the best characteristics of Sweet Melissa’s is that it’s a secret.

You might have noticed that we eat a lot of breakfast around here (about half of all reviews here were from breakfast meals.) Sweet Melissa’s serves up a competent, average breakfast. The portions are a little smaller and the flavors aren’t outstanding. It’s just regular food. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by their omlettes, both in size and overall goodness. They’re just not happening.

The biscuits are on the cakey-side which is really odd considering how truly awesome biscuits are down here in the south. However, there is a bright spot, the yogurt pancakes were a nice delicious change from the pancakes you get elsewhere. Flavorful and not too filling, I’d recommend them here. Oh, and ask for the pumpkin pancakes right now during the fall ’cause those have got to be good. Anything pumpkin is always good right? Right!

It’s hard for me to say anything really bad about Sweet Melissa’s. They have quiet low-key regulars and their staff is really down-to-earth and just working. The space isn’t pretentious and doesn’t feel anything other than comfortable. They do have local artists hanging their works on the walls and those peices are a bit fun and eclectic, but nothing so artsy like they have at Radial Cafe.

It’s too bad really. Sweet Melissa’s is sweet, but the food is average and boring.

Okay! Funny thing about us and food… and eating out. We seriously totally dig eating out… luckily we live in Atlanta and there’s good stuff every block. We have two trips planned in the next month. Phoenix, and then Charleston. While we’re specifically going to Charleston as a food trip (hahaha, I know you’re SO jealous. I know you are. How can you not be? We’re staying dead in the center of town and just there to… eat…. stupid travel channel!)

It’s funny ya know. When I lived in Phoenix, I don’t think any place was ever touted as having ‘the best’ biscuits… in fact… biscuits don’t seem to get any sort of mention at all… ha, compare that to Atlanta. It’s weird how Phoenix just really doesn’t seem to have a foodie culture at all. I understand that it’s hard since there aren’t too many restaurants worth anything, but still… with 1.5 million people, you’d think that they’d have more.. eh. maybe not. I might just be way off. I mean, I lived there for over 15 years. Although… there is one definite area that Atlanta doesn’t match Phoenix… it doesn’t really have anything that lives to the Rigoberto’s. (Actually, it’s more of a “fill in name-bertos”)

Seriously. 24 hours mexican food made in an unusually small hut looking building? Supersize burritos made from what seems like mystery meet? Ha. This is one area I think Atlanta won’t match Phoenix.
